If you don't listen to the crew and extinguish your cigarette, they will assume the smoke alarm's gone off because the plane is on fire, burst into the loo you are smoking in, and extinguish all flames they see, even if they are small glowing ones, with a full foam blast of a fire extinguisher.
You may even, being a smoker, get a heart attack and DIE as the pilot wonders whether or not to divert to Iceland.
At least there's a chance of a doctor being onboard.
